Completion for Junior Faculty Grants
WVU Stroke Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (WVU Stroke CoBRE)
Intention: The WVU Stroke CoBRE intends to fund up to 4 high quality junior faculty grants from investigators interested in conducting basic, translational and/or clinical research into the mechanism(s), prevention, prediction, biomarkers, acute treatment, recovery and/or rehabilitation of stroke.
Goal: The overall goal of this junior faculty grant program is to encourage junior investigators to apply their innovative techniques, concepts, approaches, animal models and/or human subject populations to address any of the aforementioned area of stroke research. The specific goal of the pilot grant program is to increase the amount and quality of basic, translational and clinical stroke research at WVU. This program is also intended to help junior faculty become nationally competitive for R01-type grant funding.
Commitment of Junior Faculty: Applicants from any WVU college must be able to devote 50% of their professional effort to the grant.
Non-Eligible PIs: Graduate student, post-doctoral fellows, and those at an academic rank of advanced associate professor or professor. Also, faculty who are the PI on a current or past R01 or P01 grants (or its components) are not eligible. Finally, faculty currently funded on the WVU Stroke CoBRE grant or those whose research is currently funded by another IDeA mechanism are not eligible.
Budget: Direct costs of up to $200,000/year can be requested for a two-year period between June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2019. No extensions will be allowed. Allowable budget items are reagents and supplies; animal purchase and housing costs; human subject recruitment and clinical lab costs; core facility use; graduate student stipends, post-doctoral fellow and/or technician salaries; PI salary, travel to a national scientific meeting; and small equipment.
Budget Items Not Allowed: F & A charges
Structure of the application (using Ariel 11 font and the NIH Forms except for the cover page):
- A cover page containing the title of the project; PI name, academic rank, contact information and departmental affiliation; and the same information from his/her chair. Also, both the PI and chair must sign and date the cover page.
- Detailed budget for two years (NIH Style; 2 page)
- Budget justification
- An NIH style biosketch, including other support (5-pages using the new format) for each key personnel
- A specific aims page (1 page)
- The research proposal (12 pages maximum) containing the following sections: (A) Background; (B) Significance; (C) Innovation; (D) Reproducability and Transparency; (E) Approach; (F) Interpretation of Data, Potential Pitfalls and Alternative Approaches; and (G) References Cited (Section G. does not count against the 12 page limit)
Applications that exceed the page limits or that do not have the aforementioned required components will be returned to the applicant and will not be reviewed. No appended materials will be accepted. No modifications in the application will be allowed after the deadline.
